SonicWALL TZ-180 Firewall Review

Part 2

In the Status page, the system firmware, up time and total connections status can be seen. There is also product registration information. I left out the model and registration numbers. But the firmware, uptime, CPU usage information can be seen here, for example:

On the same Status page can be seen the network interfaces. Obviously this is very important, but is only a simple summary of the public vs. private IP addresses:

On the License page can be seen the following: node licenses available and the option to activate, upgrade or renew services.

The Administration page contains an area for changing the name of the unit itself, or the admin account name. You can also adjust security settings such as session time outs (no activity) or maximum number of failed log in attempts leading to a lockout, etc. You can also adjust https and SNMP settings.

The Time page is a straightforward area to edit the time zone and enter an NTP server that synchronizes the firewall unit's time. It is simple, but important.

The Settings page covers the firmware version in use on the SonicWall TZ180 unit. The below picture shows my current scheme. But in addition to the overview and ability to download the latest firmware, an option to import or export a configuration file is offered (not shown):

The Diagnostics page can be real useful for troubleshooting VPN, DHCP, or other firewall related issues. The 'report' is generated and downloaded locally. This can be sent to SonicWall's Support team.

Also in the Diagnostics page there are some Tools available for graphical viewing of CPU usage, DNS lookups, Pings and traceroutes, and more. It is very good for troubleshooting.

Finally, the Restart link will disconnect all connected parties and, yes, reboot the SonicWall unit.

More to Come ...
