Free BSD Setup/ Install

For Sole Operating System (i.e no Windows, no Linux, etc) Install Only:

  •  This is the easiest type of install: if you’ve got a new hard drive, this should take under a half hour. If you’ve got another Operating System on the hard drive, and you want to Kill, Delete, or Exterminate it: proceed. It WILL be deleted!

  • For a Dual or Multi Boot, skip to next section. Boot from the Free BSD Install CD-Rom (Be sure that in the CMOS/BIOS setup that the CD-ROM is listed as First Boot in Boot Up/Boot Sequence Menu).

  • In ‘Kernel Configuration Menu’: skip configuration of kernel.  In the FBSD ‘/stand/sysinstall’ menu: read #1(Usage) if this is the 1st time (maybe even second or third!).  Do a Novice or Express Install (the differences are slight-Novice Install explains some details).

  • Use the “Fdisk Partition Editor”; delete any previous partitions (As needed. Again this is assuming User ONLY wants FBSD on system and plans no Dual Boot).

  •  In FDISK Editor menu: press ‘c’ to create a partition. Then set it as bootable via ‘s’. The size varies of course: a good one is 2000M(2 Gigs). Several Gigs should suffice if available. How about 5? 20?

  • Post-install Configurations at a later time allow User to expand partition as needed/available (again via using FDISK)-          The ‘type’of Partition by default is 165. 131 is for Linux, and 6 is for Dos. But that is only important for Dual/Multi Boots!

  •  Should see ‘wd0s1’ as the name of the partition. Make sure the Flags are ‘CA’. If not be sure to do a ‘c’ and a ‘s’! Then ‘q’ to finish.

  • In ‘Install Boot Manager’: keep default, ‘Install Boot MGR.’/OK. Will see a message indicating the need to create FBSD partitions inside the FDISK partitions just created. Read, OK.

  • Use the ‘A’ –‘Auto Defaults for all!” Should see appropriate partitions, with / (root), swap, /var, and /usr. ‘Q’ to finish.  These defaults do all the standard partitions needed.

  • The choice of Distributions will vary. Pick the necessary Programs; maybe “Developer” for a Development Shop; be sure to include “X Windows” in order to have a Graphical User Interface.

  • Install DES, generally a good idea for compatibility reasons (with UNIX flavors), click OK, then actually select ‘des’ on next page. Press space bar /OK.

  •  It is recommended by FBSD to install the “Ports Collection”. Read screen. Do it, unless disk space is of major concern
    .
  •  At the Xfree86 3.3.5 Dist. Screen: select “All”/OK. This will be important later for the GUI configurations.   “Install from the CD-ROM!”

  • Finally, on to configurating the Video card....you need to know the parameters of both your video card and monitor. Nobody can do this for you. It has to come from the hardware manufacturer's web site and/or manual! Keep in mind resolution (i.e vertical and horizontal refresh rates) and size (i.e in Megabytes) capacities of the card.

  • ** The ‘/stand/sysinstall’ program is very important for post-install configuration or additional installations. Don't forget this.
