Setup Instructions for the HP LaserJets, models 4000T, 4000TN, and 4000T are straightforward, new and improved. Note that the current printer drivers use the zipped file, lj390en.exe.
1. The first step is very important! Locate the printer that the User wants to print to. Write down the IP address and the name of the printer (i.e hpprinter2). AND, write down the exact model name (i.e HP 4000TN), as this does make a difference re: which drivers to use. The HP 4050TN setup is different than is this one. If the IP address is not labeled on the printer, go into the Printer Configuration Menu and print it out (must go offline first, then to network settings, etc.).
2. After obtaining the accurate information, go to the Public folder:
"Corporatedir\pubdir\HP" Locate the printer-specific driver folder and open it. Open the setup file lj390en.exe. Extract to the local C:\ drive (click OK if asked re: agreement to use WinZip/software usage, etc.). Remember the folder/file name. Probably, it will be C:\lj4000 by default.
[In times past, a folder named itonly was created on each users desktop for occasions like these. Feel free to extract the drivers to it, or create a folder named thus. Either way, remember where you extract to]. Close the WinZip program.
3. The 4000TN drivers and files do not contain a setup program. Therefore it is necessary to install the HP Jet Engine for these particular printer setups, as opposed to using the Windows 98 Add Printer Wizard. Again, in the "Corporatedir\pubdir\HP" you will see a folder named HPJeteng. Open it and then open Disk 1. Double click the blue Setup icon, then Next\Yes\Network Printing and Management. Enable HP Print Provider.
4. Finally, add the printer via the Jet Admin: Start\Programs\HP JetAdmin Utilities\Add HP JetDirect Printer
- Enable Easy Set Up\Next
- Protocol: TCP/IP, then:
- Open Printer List to view/browse available printers on the Networks
- Locate nearest Printer or the one which User wishes to print to
- After selecting/highlighting, Next. Then, name the port. This is a local name; the one the User will see in the Printers folder so the name should be useful or intuitive, like engineeringhp.
- *If Printer is NOT on Network, then TCP/IP or Printer Name must
be typed in, and this must be done in window where Printer List is (i.e if printer is not there)
- After Successfully creating Port:
- Add Printer Wizard appears, and in Manufacturers, on the left side select HP printer. Over on the right, click Have Disk and locate the drivers we downloaded from the Public Directory above (probably, C:\lj4000)
- Install Drivers/Choose Port, i.e adclaser6 or aficio200- should match the port name made in
- Print a Test Page to be sure Printing works
· An HP Printer should not be added from the Windows 98 Printers
Window/Applet. It should be done via the HP Jet Engine.
· HP's Web Site should be checked periodically for driver updates.
