The hardware and software requirements should already have been taken care of, naturally, but if not this is a great time to check the 3rd link. Otherwise, I selected a New Installation. After this begins, there is a System Configuration Check on 7 important items, as seen below:
Fortunately, all my 7 items checked out successfully, so I was able to carry on to the Feature Selection. As seen below, there are numerous features involved, such as the clients tools and analysis services. I opted to install everything, so I can poke around at the entire SQL Server 2008 product offering:
