New User Set Up

Win 98 TCP/IP Configurations:

Standard Windows 95/98/NT WS network configurations, with an emphasis here on Win 98.
Manual entries, no usage of DHCP in this case. These are for static entries in a mixed NT mode/environment (i.e NT 4 and 5).

A} In network components list, click "Client for Microsoft Networks”/Properties: check "Log on to Win NT domain”; the Domain for all is "Domain Name Here”. Then, check the "Quick logon”/OK

B} Browse the panel, remove all Novell ‘IPX/SPX’ and ‘Netware’ protocols, etc. as we don’t use Novell. Get rid of NetBeui protocols too.

C} Click the TCP/IP Ethernet/Card (the one with the arrow :>), then Properties i.e 3COM, (do NOT click the adapter) and then:

1. Configuration: from the Properties of the NIC:

a) DNS Configuration: Enable DNS:

* Host Name: i.e “jonesj1” (5 letters of last name, 1st letter of first name, more if last name < 5 letters) or i.e “fongwi” (for William Fong)

* Domain: abc.whyoh.me.com

* DNS Server Search Order: 10.2.X.X /Add (effective Jan. 2000 – possibly 172.X.X.X)

* Domain Suffix Search Order: mygoofydomain.whatalife.com, etc.

b) Bindings: be sure “Client for Microsoft Networks” is checked

c) Gateway: 10.2.1.1(depending on network: could be 10.3.1.1 if the IP is 10.3.x.x, etc)

d) Advanced: Check ‘no’ re: allow Binding to ATM

e) WINS Configuration: Enable WINS Resolution - 10.6.X.X/Add. Also available: 10.3.X.X and 10.2.X.X: these are Windows NT Backup Domain Controllers. Use 10.2.X.X if the IP address on the 10.2.x.x subnet or use 10.3.X.X if the IP is on the 10.3.1.1 subnet.

f) NetBios: N/A

g) IP Address: ‘Specify’ [Obtain from Unix Sys Admin, after DNS Entry is made]; Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0

*MUST enable “Primary Network Logon”: ‘Client for Microsoft Networks’ for NT Logons, as opposed to Windows Logon.

2. Identification:

a)  Computer Name: same as “Host Name”

b)   Workgroup: i.e “HR_Group” (no space!)

c)   Computer Description: (Department: i.e Marketing, Engineering)

3. Access Control:

a) Enable “User-Level access control” (for non- Peer-to_peer networks; then type Domain name for "Obtain list of users and groups from" (by default)

b)Then, again in the Network Panel Applet, select “File and Printer Sharing”, and then check, “I want to be able to give others access to my files”.

*Click OK, Reboot! Review, to be sure the Internet works. If not, is the Cat 5 cable connected to the correct data jack? Double-check the settings above too as needed.

D} Finally, map 2 Network Drives: right-click My Computer, then open “Map Network Drive…” The first is a public drive to view common applications and files, etc. In drive type in/select P: and for Path: \\corp\xxxxxx. The second is the user’s private, secured drive: again, right-click My Computer, and in Drive type in/select U: and for Path: \\corp\username. Users can save or back up files to the U: drive now. There should be the 2 icons available now in My Computer. This U: drive mapping will only work if the User Account has already been set up on the NT Server
