No doubt about it: this is an easy upgrade. If the PC or laptop being upgraded was built within the last year, this upgrade should be "easy". Begin the begin:
Enter The Wizard : Enter the Product ID....$$$$$$$: Then comes the Preparing to Upgrade to Windows 2000 window. This has an option to check/verify hardware compatibility. Can go to their web site for the latest updates via the link called Click Here, assuming you are connected to the Internet. You may have already done that above (see reference to links on Previous Page for researching compatible software/hardware) Note: The next 2 images/instructions will not pertain to you if the "Click Here" link is not selected. It does not hurt to follow through on this even if the research on compatibility has been completed. But it will take more time of course. ** ...but if you need to: ** if you choose to go the web site, you can check for BIOS upgrades. [I did this one using Netscape, no less] After clicking the Search for BIOS Updates, you should download cpmigdll.exe. Then, run the program downloaded. I pressed the Windows key and the D key simultaneously to get to the saved program, which I saved to the Desktop: *Running the program takes about 3 seconds, there is a flash across screen. No more action is needed. Then, you go back to the Preparing to Upgrade to Windows 2000 window (same image capture aforementioned), only if the above BIOS checker executable was downloaded (if not this step is skipped), and you need to Provide Upgrade Packs . If the second option below is chosen, you better know the NT 4/5 Administrator Account, i.e be a member of the Administrators group. In that case you simply need to know the Administrator password & domain name to be joined, and the Windows 98 network configurations are inherited: The next step, "Upgrading to the Windows 2000 NTFS File System": There are significant differences between the FAT16, FAT32 file systems (Win98) and the NTFS (NT/2000) one. If you do not know the differences, choose "No, do not upgrade my drive" for now. As you learn more about Windows 2000 Professional, the drive can be easily converted via the "convert.exe" command; run "convert.exe /?" for more information. Then, Preparing an Upgrade Report produces a summary of compatibility issues (Known: ones), in preparation of installation of Win 2K. After the report is prepared, you may see something like the following: If Outlook is your email client you will get the following upon first usage (below). It is a simple, although lengthy, reinstall. ** Will need Data1.Msi in order to complete this. Thats all folks Back to: Last Modified: Winter, 2007 |
